When my Mom told me that I would have to volunteer this past Saturday (Oct. 22) for Make a Difference Day, I wasn’t exactly excited.  I play tennis at Ponte Vedra High School on most Saturdays and then hang out with my friends or go to Vilano or St. Augustine Beach.  But as a student at Pacetti Bay Middle School, I am required to do some community service so I figured I may as well get involved with Make a Difference Day.

We teamed up with Davidson Realty who does a lot of community service.  Last year they built wheelchair-friendly access ramps for homes.  This year they connected with the St. Johns Housing Partnership to paint one of 12 homes in need in the St. Augustine area.  We met up Saturday morning at 8:30 at a small house just off King Street in St. Augustine.

pic3I had never really painted a house before so that was interesting.  I found out fast that the roller wasn’t for me.  I did a lot better with the brush but still managed to get some paint on my favorite jeans.  There was a crew of at least 10 of us so the painting went fast.  A couple of other kids my age were there who also needed community service hours so that was cool.  At one point, some of the neighbors came out to see what we were doing.  I think they were pretty surprised how much better the house was looking with just a new coat of paint.  Then a kid from the neighborhood who was around my age came over to help.  He climbed right up one of the ladders and started painting.

The guy in charge from the St. Johns Housing Partnership was telling us how the inside of the house had already been redone.  He was also telling us about all the things they do for St. Augustine.  They have a weatherization program that helps people who don’t have much money fix up their homes so they don’t waste too much energy and then they can afford their electric bills.

pic1The best part of the day was when the little old lady who lived in the house we were painting came outside.  She took pictures. She was so happy.  We were a little embarrassed that some of the painting wasn’t perfect but she thought it all looked “wonderful.”  It felt good to make a difference!
