Your home, community and mindset are intricately connected, which is why Spring cleaning has been around for centuries. It’s not just about dusting shelves and decluttering but refreshing your space and connecting with your community. Your space is truly a reflection of your mind.

In fact, every year, nearly 80% of Americans partake in spring cleaning, a ritual that not only improves their home but also boosts their mental and physical health.

No matter your background, it is clear that cleaning is beneficial. Having a clean space can improve your mental health and focus, reduce anxiety and benefit your physical health by removing dust and dirt, creating a healthier environment for you and your family.

Cultural Traditions of Spring Cleaning

Many different cultures have unique spring cleaning traditions:

  • In preparation for the Lunar New Year, it is a Chinese tradition to sweep homes to clear away bad luck and disease before the New Year begins.
  • A Jewish tradition involves clearing homes of chametz (leavened bread) and thoroughly cleaning them in preparation for Passover.
  • Khāne-takānī, or Shaking the House, is a Persian ritual that involves a thorough cleansing of the home and a refreshment of flowers to prepare for the Persian New Year, which coincides with the Spring Equinox.

This year, you can combine the spirit of ancient spring cleaning rituals with a new addition: giving back.

Why Giving Back Matters

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed while decluttering, and many people end up tossing perfectly usable items. According to a survey by Mercari, around 56% of people who participate in spring cleaning throw away or leave their items on the street each year. Donating those items, however, offers an opportunity to transform spring cleaning into an act of kindness that benefits your community.

Sometimes one person’s junk can be another person’s treasure. Decluttering your space and doing something for others at the same time might just level up your spring cleaning.

Local Charities and Thrift Stores to Donate Your Items in St. Johns County

Here is a multitude of different charities that your gently used items can make a real impact on:

St. Vincent de Paul Society Thrift Shop

St. Vincent de Paul Society Thrift Shop, near Vilano Beach, focuses on homelessness prevention, rental assistance and disaster relief. They offer a free service to pick up used furniture and other large items you may be looking to donate. For an even bigger donation, you can also donate a car to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, helping volunteers provide food, water and shelter to people in need across the country. They will pick up your vehicle at no cost and handle all the back-end work of selling it and obtaining your tax receipt.

S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue

S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue, founded in 2008, rescues pets from kill shelters, and it is a great place to donate gently used pet supplies. Located near St. Augustine Beach, you can drop off cages, leashes, bowls, towels and pet food.

Betty Griffin Center

Betty Griffin Center supports survivors of domestic violence. They have two thrift store locations, one on Anastasia Island and one in Julington Square. In-kind donations are accepted of clothes, furniture and accessories. You can drop off second-hand items at the Anastasia Square Shopping Plaza location from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday through Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The Julington Square location accepts drop-offs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday through Friday. Betty Griffin also offers a free pickup service for larger items, such as furniture. To schedule a pickup, call 904-495-8216.

Friends of the Library

Each branch of the St. Johns County Public Library has a Friends of the Library non-profit organization that supports it. This is a great resource for donating books that are sitting on your shelves, possibly covered in a layer of dust. The library branches that are currently accepting donations during library hours are the Anastasia Island Branch, Bartram Branch, Main Branch, Ponte Vedra Beach Branch, Southeast Branch, and the Bookmobile. If you have very large donations, a box or more than three bags, it is best to call ahead to determine the best time to drop off your books.

Alpha Omega Thrift Store

The Alpha Omega Thrift Store’s funds support the Alpha-Omega Miracle Home, which supports women and children in Northeast Florida. They accept all types of items as long as they are in good condition. You can drop off your donations Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Furniture donations are accepted only on Saturdays. All donations to their consignment store are 100% tax-deductible, and a staff member will be available to help you obtain a form documenting your donations.

Make Your Home and Community Feel Fresh

Donating items during spring cleaning not only helps others but also brings a sense of satisfaction and purpose to your efforts. Whether you’re in downtown St. Augustine or near the shore of Ponte Vedra Beach, giving back during spring cleaning is a simple way to support your neighbors, local organizations and the community of Northeast Florida.
