Davidson staffer Cindy Vaughn wears many hats—Accounting Manager, HR Manager—but a hat many people might not know she wears is as Author.

In fact, Cindy, who has been with Davidson Realty for more than 16 years, was recently awarded first place in the Wordhaus Fiction Writing Contest! Cindy’s story, “Dirty Little Secret,” won in the Thriller category. She was kind enough to answer a few questions about her writing.

Tell us a bit about your experiences as a writer. I have always loved to write. I have one poem published called “Solitaire.” It was published in the “National Anthology of Poetry.” I wrote a children’s book called “Pimple the Pelican” for my grandson and self-published that. My dream is to get my novel published. I am now in the revision process of it. I finished it about a year ago and pitched it to ten agents. I was so excited when I received a response from Sue Grafton’s agent requesting to read my full manuscript. After five days of nail-biting suspense, she told me she couldn’t connect with my main character. She gave me some great advice though, and I have heeded it. Hopefully, with this revision, I will be able to find an agent and get my book published. It is called “Death’s Whisper.”

Are thrillers your favorite genre? What other types of literature do you enjoy? The Suspense/Thriller genre is definitely my favorite with some of my favorite authors being Patricia Cornwell, John Sanford, Lawrence Sanders, Sue Grafton and James Patterson. I absolutely love the classics though…everything by Jane Austen, but my favorite being “Pride and Prejudice.” I also love Lucy Maud Montgomery’s “Anne of Green Gables.”

Have you won other writing contests in the past? This is my first contest win. Writing short stories is great experience. It pushes you to write in a condensed format but to pack it full of impact to catch the reader’s attention. It is great discipline. I never really gave it a chance prior to following that agent’s advice about joining writing groups, and from there, to join every writing contest I could in order to get my name out there.
