This was the sixth year for the male participant beauty contest and over $25,000 was raised for various charities by the nine contestants.  Bravely flaunting their stuff in evening dress, swimsuit wear and followed by a talent competition, the contestants ranged from a St. Augustine attorney, banking executive, firefighter as well as a World Golf Village dentist. 

Amidst laughter from the audience, who anxiously tried to vie for position near the stage to give them money, the contestants entertained flawlessly.  Representing “The Arc of the St. Johns,” beauty contestant Bob Bergstrom did his own personal Paula Dean imitation, complete with a “hey ya’ll” apron, by filling a donut with tons of butter and whipped cream.  There was dancing, singing and acrobatics galore.  But, ultimately the St. Augustine Vice President of Business Development of the Wind Capital Group took the crown.

St. Augustine’s lovely charm and beautiful fall climate provided a great backdrop to this wonderful event benefitting charities such as the St. Francis House, St. Augustine Youth Services, Big Brothers and Sisters, Firefighters for Families and Limelight Theatre KidsfACTory.  A great time was had by all and it just goes to show you that truly – “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

The crispy pork belly on top of sticky rice with sweet and spicy chili sauce was by far my favorite appetizer! Most of us went back for seconds. We raffled a twosome for the Slammer & Squire golf course, a foursome for South Hampton’s beautiful course, 2 Jaguar tickets to the Jags/Texans game, and two $50 Taps gift cards. We had great participation in the raffles, which means even more money to the American Cancer Society – the official sponsor of birthdays!

I have participated in the walk for the last 4 years with Davidson Realty. Davidson Realty has been participating for the past 16 years. Registration starts at 8 a.m. at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. The views from the school over the Intracostal are absolutely beautiful! The energy from the participants is guaranteed to warm your heart and put a smile on your face.  To top that off Dunkin Donuts will get you going on (my favorite) coffee and donuts. There is a DJ and Joy Purdy from First Coast News is the MC.

I can’t tell you what the weather is going to be like because two years ago we were in shorts and t-shirts. Last year we wore warm jackets, gloves and hats. But I can tell you that you will absolutely enjoy the 3 mile walk through the historic district of downtown St. Augustine. My daughter, Audrey, was 6 and walked the entire walk! Throughout the walk, we get water and treats from the Boy Scouts.  When we get back to the school, Five Star Pizza is providing lunch and Blue Bell ice cream will be there with dessert. Awards are given for the money raised. By noon, you will be done and moved on to the rest of your weekend. But I promise you that starting your weekend off “right” will be so fulfilling. We can’t really think of anyone who needs an excuse to try some tasty brews but we’re offering up a great reason anyway!  Davidson Realty and Taps Bar & Grill have teamed up to present NovemberFest on Wednesday, November 9 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.  This casual beer tasting will feature six specialty beers and delicious appetizers. Proceeds raised from the beer tasting will support the World Golf Village Relay for Life Team which raises money for the American Cancer Society.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Ticket price includes six specialty beer tastings, one pint of your favorite flight and appetizers.  Raffle tickets will also be sold. Prizes include: a twosome of golf for the Slammer & Squire course at World Golf Village; two $50 Taps gift cards; and two tickets to the Jaguar/Houston Texans game at Everbank Field on November 27th.
